Shared Tables: Navigating Dietary Diversity through Plant-Based Meals
In the spirit of cohousing, our common meals are more than just food; they are an expression of our commitment to community, sustainability, and mutual care. We recognize that our neighbors come to the table with a wide range of dietary backgrounds, from lifelong vegans to those who enjoy a mixed diet.
Our focus on plant-based meals at plantbasedcommonmeals.com is guided by three core principles designed to honor that diversity:
1. Inclusion as a Starting Point
A plant-based menu serves as the ultimate “common denominator.” While not everyone eats animal products, almost everyone can enjoy a well-prepared plant-based meal. By centering our shared kitchen on plants, we remove the barriers of many common allergens and ethical concerns, ensuring that no neighbor is left out and no one has to eat a “special” separate dish. We cook this way so that we can all eat the same meal, together.
2. The “Both/And” Approach to Community
We view the common meal as a specific community project, distinct from what individuals choose to eat in their private homes. Our goal is not to dictate personal diets, but to provide a vibrant, nutrient-dense, and delicious culinary experience for the collective. We focus on “crowding in” flavor and variety, showcasing how hearty and satisfying plant-based eating can be, regardless of one’s personal dietary label.
3. Practical Sustainability & Simplicity
Managing a kitchen for dozens of people is a significant task. Plant-based cooking simplifies our logistics, lowers our collective environmental footprint, and often proves more cost-effective for the community. It allows our volunteer cooks to focus on high-quality, seasonal ingredients that nourish us all while respecting the planet we share.
How We Manage Mixed Needs
In our mixed-diet community, we embrace flexibility without compromising our plant-based core:
The Accessible Core: Our main dishes are always 100% plant-based to ensure total accessibility.
Optional Customization: On occasions where the community desires, optional “add-ons” can be served on the side, allowing individuals to customize their plates without affecting the integrity of the shared meal.
Curiosity Over Conflict: We encourage a culture of culinary curiosity. Our meals are an invitation to discover new ingredients and recipes that support health and longevity for every member of our community.
The table is always open, and there is a place for everyone
